Hi, I have been a long time fan of the band tool and actually discovered Grant's work through the drummer Danny Carey's website. It includes all the carfax monographs and 5 or 6 Grant books with reviews by BMB and also an interesting story about a trip to Rennes le Chateau. I feel that there music is in line with the typhonian current and have read several interviews with Danny where he mentions Kenneth Grant and removing the ego to let the lunar current reflect through his drumming. Drumming as we all know is ancient and can effect changes in consciousness. Blair also wrote Ijynx which I believe KG wrote an introduction and Confessions of an Aleister Crowley bibliophile along with the tool and Danny's Website. There live shows also show alot of thelemic imagery and sigils and Danny's also been known to set up his drumkit in line with the unicursal hexagram but who knows. I was just wondering if this interest anyone else in this forum and if they were aware of the website(its a little dated but still pretty cool).

I, too, have long been a fan of "Tool"! I hope their new album comes out soon! I have fond memories of attending a concert on their 10,000 Days tour!

Also its very interesting what Grant says about Count Basie's jump rhythms and since Carey plays odd time signatures and polyrhythms that could be used to induce trance states and altered states of consciousness.

Hi movebywillalone, I have been a long time follower of both TOOL and Danny Carey's drumming. I think you have pretty much 'hit the nail on the head' in terms of an introduction to the band and it's use of occult symbolism. Danny Carey and Blair Mackenzie Blake (BMB), who writes all of TOOL's newsletters, are avid Kenneth Grant and Crowley aficionados. 'The Wickedest Books of the World' by BMB (foreward by Carey) illustrates both their collection in Crowley material and their prolonged interest in the Thelemic current. When Carey's updated website launched in 2009/2010 he included a list of selectable books of interest, which as you pointed out, included almost all Grant titles in addition to ' Earth Inferno' by Spare. As opposed to their previous tours, it was hard to ignore the large seven pointed star of BABALON that was a backdrop to their immersive set. Adam Jones, the guitarist, has also been more forward with incorporating the star in his limited edition tour posters at each show. The live album Salival incorporated a reverse Tree of Life into the artwork and the 2006 album, 10,000 days, had the tracks based off of the 10 Sephirot of the Tree of Life (see January 2012 newsletter). As a drummer myself I've studied Carey's methodology and reviewed his setup many times. He does set his entire setup in a unicursal hexagram fashion and I believe been cited saying that drumming for him is a method of entering trance. I would tend to agree with your assertion on the odd-time signatures that Carey and TOOL use, as they seem to evoke a numinous quality in both musicians who recognize the signatures and the general listeners. All my best, D. PS- The aforementioned website, for those who have not discovered it yet, is www.toolband.com . It has a wealth of information and if you can find the hidden article regarding Rennes Le Chateau it makes an interesting read.

This is Danny Carey's site mentioned above: www.dannycarey.com/

Apologies, you're correct - I got side tracked on which site you were referring to. The TOOLBAND website does have a link to an earlier thread that predates Danny's website that is located via a hidden link when you scroll through the side bar of the brown appendage of sorts that attaches to the television. In any case, I hope some fruitful conversations come of these topics - I've been interested in the TOOL relationship with their music and influences of Grant, Crowley and Spare. Cheers!

I think the great album Lateralus is where they really came into using music as spritual alchemy, with the famous lyrics "I know the pieces fit as I watched them fall away..." and the song Parabola is genius. I dont recall them using specific occult imagery until that time period. Didnt hear the albums after that, but I was into them since Sober hit MTV. Daney Careys drumming is definitely hypnotic especially on Lateralus. I want to go listen to Aenima and Lateralus now, I havnt heard them in years. For the record I feel that a good deal of Death metal, Black Metal and Doom music is a manifestation of Typhonian energies.

Nice choice, with the artwork of Kyle Fite as your profile avatar. Does anyone know how a person might go about contact Blair? Thanks! Kyle was kind enough to say "yes" when I asked him if I could use my personal favourite piece of his, "Dagonian Gate", as my Avatar, here. Nice chap! There's a "chat" function on the toolband.com site: www.toolband.com/chat/index.htmlNever used it myself, but that's an option, I guess. There's also the Tool Army, in which becoming a member may enable contact. Again, I'm not a member myself, but it's another option.

Also its very interesting what Grant says about Count Basie's jump rhythms and since Carey plays odd time signatures and polyrhythms that could be used to induce trance states and altered states of consciousness. I have been studying polyrhythms for some time now. I began using a book Danny had recommended for beginners. Playing multiple rhythms has been a yogic goal for me. That concentration that is not given much room for play I had not heard of Count Basie but will look into this portion of Grants writing. Many thanks for the mention! -Sow

I don't have the book but I'm certain some of the photos pictured in it are from my collection. Blair Blake purchased the last of my once-extensive collection of Crowley first editions circa 2000 and specified that some of them were for Carey's collection. Very nice guy to deal with, no quibbling.
I was completely unfamiliar with the band.
