I've been working my way through the trilogies for several years now (I'm finished BTMZ) and I'm having some trouble with the concept of Atlantean (or Afro-Atlantean Voudon) sorcery and Lemurian (Typhonian) magic. I know Grant goes into detail about how Bertiaux's system is Atlantean in OTCOT, but does he ever explain why the Typhonian tradition is Lemurian? Am I forgetting? or is this something in The Ninth Arch?

I know in a few places Grant mentions that the hill of Arunachala dates back to Lemurian times and this connection to Ramana Maharshi may be part of the association with the Typhonian current. But I think it is Beyond the Mauve Zone where the real connection is established. This is from page 8: One other magician only, known to us, has thrust beyond Yuggoth. I refer to Michael Bertiaux. But whereas his parampara stems from Atlanto-African sources, the Current of the Occult Typhonian Order is fundamentally Lemurian. One tentacle of the Lemurian energies is manifest in entities known as the Grey Ones. Crowley sealed this line of transmission in the portrait of their leader, Lam, which he presented to me in 1945. There has been much speculation concerning the identity of Lam with Aiwass. Crowley’s claim that Aiwass was his Holy Guardian Angel does not necessarily comport its surface meaning. Crowley did not, to my knowledge, openly identify Lam with his Holy Guardian Angel although he most emphatically did so in the case of Aiwass. Suffice it to say, Lam has furnished an explanation although it is just as likely to be misconstrued as Crowley’s own. It is that Lam is a tentacle of S’lba who, embracing the Tree of Life entire from Nu-Isis to Malkuth, saturates earth’s aura with the self-same Current that powers the Occult Typhonian Order.
Lam is a central figure to the Typhonian gnosis, so in a sense you could see this parampara descending from Lam. There is also quite a few references in The Ninth Arch. I thought this was particularly striking: 757-7. piercing the scalene dreamer in Lemurian seas; awakening with its probe the Eye of Set. The “scalene dreamer” is an obvious reference to Cthulhu who lies “not dead, but dreaming” in the submerged City of R’lyeh. “Lemurian seas” reminds us that the Stellar Wisdom predates Atlantis even, and harks back to aeons of which vestigial echoes yet persist in the oceanic myth cycles of the Pacific islands. The Apex of the Pyramid, in its thrust upward from the ocean-bed to the stars, awakens the Eye of Set (see Comment to 756/6). The Eye is the inward doorway which receives the entry of the Qrixkuor Light as it illumines and thereby objectivizes the dreams of Cthulhu. 7 is the number of Set; the crocodile, Sevekh, signifies this number as the Beast of the Deep.

Also just came across this passage in The Ninth Arch that I had forgotten about:
824-16. Dark Child of Lemurian aeons; dark bride of Festat whom the Beast knew but dimly. The “Dark Child” is Awryd. “ ... of Lemurian aeons”.The verse delivers a jolt to those who visualize witchcraft in a Christian or even a pagan context. What is implied here is that the Old Ones trafficked with planet Earth before it solidified. The first ‘witches’ were masses of starfire which became the medium, and later the mediums, through which the swirling energy manifested in sentient form. These forms drew down the stellar consciousness and transmitted it to the earliest life-forms which, through successive aeons, became ‘human’.
Quite possibly the most evocative narrative of the origins of witchcraft I have ever come across!
