Liber 729 entry dated Feb. 24, 1918:
“Now the place where I am standing is isolated with 20 – 25 feet between us and the rest of the mt. A sort of crevice is all around me. I ask the W. what it means and I see see ripe corn. Now I see myself with green corn in my lap preparing it for cooking. This means that I am at Nepta . A. admired me because I was climbing up seeking truth . This stopping on the way a is a sort of being side tracked in what Nepta would be. That is I would stop and bask in the sunlight of sensual pleasures or emotional enjoyment of such a life. ((I do not like a this thought. It makes me think of what it would mean in sacrificing real work.))”
Any thoughts on where Nepta is, if it is a real place?
The only possibility I can come up with is Nefta, Tunisia: “would I were at Nefta and 25!” (AC diary 10.12.1944 quoted in Grant 1991 “Remembering Aleister Crowley” p. 6
Age 25 would make it c. 1900, but it appears from my (casual) research he was no where near north Afica in 1900, and only went to Tunisia in 1923, long after the Amalantrah Working, though he was in Algeria with Neuburg in 1909 which borders Tunisia, and Nefta is near the border, apparently, though some 500km by road from Bou Saâda.
or perhaps “Napata was a city-state of ancient Nubia on the west bank of the Nile River, at the site of modern Karima, Northern Sudan.” ?
In any case, it would appear the the 729 entry was dictated by Roddie Minor, and i have no information as to here travels or not in North Africa prior to 1918.
I may be totally off the track here, thinking “Nepta” refers to a real location.
Would appreciate any thoughts or info.
