I've recently discovered, in Crowley's 777, a passage that seems to reveal the backside of the Tree: "...the limitless ocean of negative light does not proceed from a centere, for it is centereless, but it concentrates a centere, which is the number one of the Sephiroth Kether, the Crown, the First Sephira; which therefore may be said to be the Malkuth or the number ten of the hidden Sephiroth." (777, page 6) The "hidden Sephirah" would than be the back of the Tree. Also, in Crowley's The Vision and the Voice, The Cry of the 14th Aethyr, is written: "Behold, the Great One of the Night of Time stirreth, and with his tail he churneth up the slime, and of the foam thereof shall he make stars. And in the battle of the Python and the Sphinx shall the glory be to the Sphinx, but the victory to the Python." Here I would think that the Sphinx may represent the front of the Tree and the Python (Typhon) the backside. If the backside was the precursor to the front than this Meonic slime is that which "produced" the front. Well this reminds me of a dream I had a few night ago where I was reading a Typhonian dream book written by Kenneth Grant. The subject was the kabalah and the Tree of Life, and an idea of the Abyss being raised up on a great dragon - Tiamat - with 11 heads. Each of the heads was of course one of the 'powerzones' of the Tree of Life, the sephiroth including Da'ath. One of the key points was that there had never been a "fall" as is often given as doctrine in the western kabalah. Rather, there had been a 'raising' of the Heads. Just a dream of course....

Ha! Very true John. But I do love Liber 231 and have worked quite a bit with those energies. They are great for inspiring rather perverse art. As to the Aeons of Maat and Horus, Levenda, in his book The Dark Lord actually explains the precedent in other systems for Aeons and Ages to run concurrently. Previous examples are in Gnostic systems. I thought that aspect the strongest part of Levenda's book actually; consideration of other systems of aeonology is a useful context for viewing the Isis / Osiris / Horus / Maat pattern. I also got a lot of useful information in this area from a discussion of aeonology in David Hall's comparative study of Crowley and Gurdjieff, Beelzebub and the Beast. Ah I have yet to read the Beelzebub and the Beast book and this is a good timely reminder. It is sitting on a shelf with many other books in the queue waiting for their time!

Michael- I haven't gotten around to reading Beelzebub and the Beast yet, either. I'll have to get on that. I also really liked how Levenda extended the Aeons to 7,000 years instead of 2,000. It seemed to make more sense in terms of what we know about history now.

Achad even had some premonitions about the parallelism and individual aspect of Aeonics in his essay Stepping Out of the Old Aeon and Into the New from the old Equinox. I have not read that one in many years, but from what I recall the idea was that the aeons were representative of capabilities in human consciousness, and that it requires a conscious effort on the part of the individual to "raise" their consciousness from Osiris to Horus, etc. In this way, it not only shows how there can be multiple aeons running in society, but also how individuals can work to open to different aeons/levels of consciousness, and (advanced) even pop in and out of different levels

Gregory,
That is a brilliant idea. I think I have that essay somewhere and will now have to find it. A Thelemic teacher of mine once told me that the Aeon of Horus must be opened within the initiate first and that once a significant number of people have done this, then the New Aeon can really start rolling. Of course, this is not to say that the 93 Current isn't already manifest on the planet now, but that we will see some real changes once many individuals have opened themselves up to this energy.

Just saw this response... talk about some strange timelines! I think it makes a lot of sense. The Aeonic currents open up potential, but do not necessarily pull or push everyone along. Also explains why many people can still be very Osirian when the Aeons of Horus, and even Maat, have been "opened up" for quite some time

If they're all meant to be "simultaneous", how many Aeons are there then? Grant also mentioned there would be an Aeon of Zain "to follow", and I can also remember reading him writing about "The Aeon of Choronzon" somewhere, and a "Wordless" and a "Nameless" Aeon too (if they're two different things). That comes to eight so far, including the four main ones of Isis, Osiris, Horus and Maat. Are there any others? Also if they're ALL meant to be simultaneously running then it wouldn't only be the Horus and the Maat double current ones which are "concurrent", would it? Mostly Daath is in Malkuth. However, as Grant says, Yesod is the other doorway to Universe B...and I have felt that very strongly. And yes...the outer gateways are definitely more accessible...at times frighteningly so. I love this and am quite happy that my mundane self is living in such an interesting time. Is there any difference between his using a "doorway" or a "gateway" other than semantically or are they in essence the same thing.

It's rather amazing that no Grant expert knows the answer to this one, and I thought there were at least several "Typhonians" on this website that seemed to know everything there was to know about him and his beliefs - or a lot about them, anyway. So nobody can tell me how many Aeons he said there were? Fat lot of use everyone would be in a pub quiz on the subject! If I have to do the work myself (which it looks as if I have to!) then as far as I can work out, the eight (or maybe seven if Nameless and Wordless are the same) Aeons he listed are:- 1) The Nameless Aeon - before 5000 BCE, no dates given }same thing? 2) The Wordless Aeon - before 5000 BCE, no dates given }same thing? 3) The Aeon of Isis - approx 5000 BCE to 500 BCE 4) The Aeon of Osiris - approx 500 BCE to 1904 CE 5) The Aeon of Horus - 1904 CE to ? }concurrent from 1948 CE? 6) The Aeon of Maat - 1948 CE to ? }concurrent from 1948 CE? 7) The Aeon of Zain - to "follow on" from Maat 8) The Aeon of Choronzon - no dates given Can we say that's it, or are there any others? No "Typhonian" seems to be able to explain for me either: if all the aeons are in some sense simultaneous, as Michael Staley and some others have suggested: Rather than a succession of aeons over a period of time, we can deduce that the aeons are simultaneous, how it is that only the Horus and Maat aeons are considered concurrent? "Doorway" and "Gateway" to all appearances seemed to mean the same thing - another synonym for "Passageway". But even though it would relate to daleth, the supernal door between Chokmah and Binah, does the title "Outer Doorways" have quite the same ring to it?

David, although I'm no "expert" the Nameless and the Wordless Aeon are two separate ones - the Nameless is meant to be the "pre-historic" first one before the Aeon of Isis and the Wordless one is meant to come after the Aeon of Maat but before the Aeon of Zain (- or is it after Zain? I am not absolutely sure myself: maybe someone else can confirm that one.) So yes, there would appear to be eight Aeons altogether listed in Kenneth Grant's scheme of things. In addition I've only come across Grant mentioning the Aeon of Choronzon in Outer Doorways - I mean, Gateways! - but I don't know when that one's supposed to take place either as I don't think he mentioned it in a temporal context. To tell the truth, I'm not really sure what that whole thing is meant to be about as his personal take on Choronzon is very much his own and markedly different from the "traditional" one. Perhaps somebody else more familiar with that book could elucidate that too (can it be meant to be also "concurrent" in some fashion with the Aeon of Horus?)

It seems reasonable to assume that Crowley would not approve of Grant's work; I think Old Crow's ego would have gotten in the way, as it did with Achad. However, Grant's elaboration on Liber 231 seems to stack up perfectly. It seems like a natural evolution of Crowley's work...and explains a lot. I don't know if I believe that the Aeon of Maat is in actual, physical manifestation...as the Aeon of Horus is. I believe the Aeon of Maat resides in the consciousness, the psyche of some adepts. The paradox would be, I guess, that if the Aeon of Maat resides in our psyche than it would naturally manifest in the physical universe. Thoughts? I agree with this: the "Aeon" of MAAT opens when an individual successfully crosses the Abyss: from "Liber A’ash vel Capricorni Pneumatici sub figurâ CCCLXX A∴A∴ Publication in Class A": "For two things are done and a third thing is begun. Isis and Osiris are given over to incest and adultery. Horus leaps up thrice armed from the womb of his mother. Harpocrates his twin is hidden within him. Set is his holy covenant, that he shall display in the great day of M.A.A.T., that is being interpreted the Master of the Temple of A∴A∴, whose name is Truth."

As forward looking as Crowley may have been he was still a product of Old Aeon thinking

Liber_A-Ash_Comment AC CSJ.pdf (108.86 KB) "Set is his holy covenant, that he shall display in the great day of M.A.A.T., that is being interpreted the Master of the Temple of A∴A∴, whose name is Truth." Given this thread has a running theme of Aeonics, I will chime in on my experience, which appears consistent with the development here.
There seem to be 3 key Aeonic spheres for specific attainments. Throughout the literature, confusion comes in when considered in a temporal vs acausal framework. I suppose possibly both are true to some degree.
The Aeons of Horus, Maat, and Zain are aeons Grant heavily focused on. On the perspective outside of time, my experience is that these run concurrent as has been noted, potentially as concentric spheres, or possibly interlocking or overlapping somehow. This could mean that there are 3 Aeonic levels of the self (Nephesch, Rauch, Neshemah) which are attenuated to these, but possibly on the mundane plane we are stuck in that of Isis and Osiris.
The attainment of the Aeon of Zain, being the keys of Horus and Maat to enter then Aeon of Zain as Horus of the Two Horizons, a form of Set. The Aeon of Zain is relevant only above the Abyss, as it places the operator between the gate of Babalon and the vortex of Daath, on the path of Zain, outside of time and duality. And this being a path of NEMO, Master of the Temple, uniting the twin currents of the Silver Star: MAAT = MT + AA. The Bindu Raised to the Day of Be With Us, as Lord Shiva descends among the temples of Hathor and Kephra. FIAT being the 4 elements, whose 4 in 1 quintessence is enthroned on this Day of annihilation, At-ONE-ment, Judgement Day, the End of the 'World', the TOWER (TWO-ER) of SET, etc.
